The next generation of the Internet: IPv6
Although there is not currently a shortage of IPv4 addresses in the U.S.A., there is speculation that by the year 2013 the IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) address space will be depleted in order to accommodate the new technologies that support the growing numbers of users, applications, appliances, and services. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) addresses these requirements by substantially improving flexibility, scalability, security, and management. A second major reason for the implementation of IPv6 is international competition. Most of the industrialized and emerging economies are moving toward IPv6.
